Sommeliers Selections

Marc Bredif Vouvray (Loire Valley) 2013 (France) Glass: $11 Bottle: $37

This white wine is made from one of the great white grapes in the world; Chenin Blanc. While good Chenin Blancs come from South Africa and the U.S.A, the Loire valley is where it shines the brightest.

Only Riesling rivals it for versatility, possibly because, like Riesling, Chenin Blanc offers great acidity. This permits it to make wines that range from bone dry to moderately sweet or even to lusciously sweet and nectarlike, all the while retaining a refreshing balance. It even makes great sparkling wines. Most of these wines can even age and evolve for decades.

Marc Bredif is one of the larger wineries in the village of Vouvray. Its vineyards have soils of mainly chalk clay, with some parcels having flint clay soils. The vines are 25-30 years old on average. This wine is an excellent example of what Chenin Blanc can do if it is treated with love and attention. It boasts honeysuckle, chamomile, citrus fruits and a fine thread of minerality. My favorite part is the texture, rich and enveloping and yet it is delicate at the same time.

Delicious by itself this wine sings even more when paired with food. Its high acidity and rich body make it dance with a variety of foods, from sea food to chicken and pork, all dishes get better with this wine!
